A Level Art & Design

Course ID

Art and Design provides students with opportunities to develop personal responses to ideas, observations, experiences, environments and cultures in practical, critical and contextual forms.

The specification comprises one unit at AS and two units at A2. Students will be introduced to a variety of experiences employing a range of media, processes and techniques appropriate to the chosen area of study:

Course content

Students will produce practical and critical/contextual work in one or more areas including painting, drawing, mixed-media, textiles, sculpture, land art, printmaking and photography: lens-based and/or light-based media.

Entry requirements

Prior Learning.

It is recommended that pupils have at least a C grade GCSE in Art or Design. If not it is advisable to bring a small portfolio of Artwork to demonstrate skills.


AS Course

Unit 1 – Coursework Portfolio 40%


40% of A Level No time limit

80 marks

Portfolio of work set and marked by the centre and moderated by WJEC


Unit 2 – Externally Set Assignment 36%


35% % of A Level

Work produced will be marked by the centre and moderated by WJEC


A2 Course

Unit 3 – Personal Investigation

Externally set assignment 24%

Work produced will be marked by the centre and moderated by WJEC



Future opportunities

A level Art and Design provides a suitable foundation for the study of Art or design in a range of higher education courses or direct entry into employment in the creative world of Art, Illustration, Film, Photography etc.
